Towards India’s Northeastern belt, the state of Sikkim is traceable. The body that supervises vocational education in the state is the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) that comes under the Human Resource Development Department of the Sikkim Government.
Then, at the national level and state level, the joint efforts of both the National Council of Vocational Education (NCVT) and State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) are responsible for running the skill-based training centers that are the Government-funded Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-owned Industrial Training Centers (ITCs).
For fulfilling the career aspirations of India’s youth population that is interested in gaining technical know-how, rather than continuing with traditional schooling, the technical training centers were set up. Both theoretical and practical education constitutes the trade programs, where the former is 30% and the latter is 70%.
The various trades are grouped under the NCVT/SCVT category. The National Level Trade Certificates (NLTCs) are given after successful completion of the NCVT courses; and the State Level Trade Certificates (SLTCs) pertain to the SCVT trades. The NLTCs and SLTCs are needed to apply for the national-level and state-level jobs. As such, the students can earn their livelihood while making a contribution to the country’s development.
