The Meghalaya state in India lies towards the Northeastern region of the country. Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya where vocational training is governed by the Directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training (DECT) that operates via the Training Wing and Employment Wing. The DECT comes under the Department of Labour of the Meghalaya Government.
The DECT’s Employment Wing maintains ties with companies, with the objective of bridging the gap of skilled manpower resources that is prevalent in industries due to development taking place rapidly. The Training Wing is responsible for sharpening the students’ skills via systematic training.
Technical training entails theoretical and practical education, conducted via the government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and the private-based Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). The training centers work in accordance with the Government’s Craftsmen Scheme and Apprenticeship Training Scheme for imparting skill-based training.
The National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT), in unison with the State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT), conducts the trade programs. The aspirants can choose to pursue NCVT or SCVT trades, following which they are awarded the National Level Trade Certificates and State Level Trade Certificates, respectively, upon successful course completion. Thereafter, they can avail opportunities at the national or state level, accordingly.
