In India’s Kerala state, the Industrial Training Department (ITD), coming under the Directorate of Industrial Training of the Ministry of Labour & Skills that functions under the Kerala Government, has the responsibility of managing vocational education across India’s different states.
Similar to the rest of other India’s states, Kerala imparts vocational training through the government-owned Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-funded Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). Also, the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) drafts the policies while working at the national level; and in turn, the State Council of Vocational Training works at the state level and follows the NCVT’s guidelines.
The ITD implements the Kerala Government’s Craftsmen Scheme and Apprenticeship Training Scheme as part of conducting the skill-based programs within the state. There are several NCVT and SCVT trades that the aspiring candidates can pursue.
The students after successful completion of the NCVT trade courses are conferred with the National Trade Level Certificate; and the State Level Trade Certificates are issued for the SCVT trades. With the NLTCs, the pupils can apply for the national level jobs; while the SLTCs are applicable for the state level opportunities.

The trade programs in India are conducted in a series of 4 semesters where the pupils are required to appear for the exams of all semesters.
